This week in class we had to generate themes that are
represented in media. One theme that I see being frequently used in media is
popularity. I think popularity is represented in different genres by the
difference in the clothing. If you think about all the movies or TV shows that
you’ve seen thus far, each character has a different personality and dresses
according to their personality. For example in the movie “Mean Girls” it was
easy to distinguish between the different social groups. The “Jocks” were the
athletes and always wore their jersey or lettermen. The popular students are
usually the ones who drive expensive cars and wear the latest fashion. The way
media stresses about popularity and top trends makes our society become
concerned about fashion and keeping up with the latest trend. I believe that
all ages are concerned about being popular. It’s solely the media’s fault for
why there are different social groups in school. If one were to examine an
elementary school, all the little girls and boys dress the same. Social groups
are created by fashion trends; the children who dress differently than the rest
are considered “weird”. I honestly think its ridiculous that our society
doesn’t allow others to be unique. Our society has corrupt our minds into thinking
that fashion should be the same throughout everyone making it mandatory for everyone
to stay with the current fashion or else you’d be considered “different”. I personally
believe that everyone is different and unique in various ways and should be
able to display that through their appearance.
I totally agree with you. Kids really don't care about popularity until later on when they truly see what's going on on tv. Plus the clothes they wear are usually handpicked by their mothers.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with you Joe! We have a lot of clone like people when it comes to fashion you see everybody wearing the same kind of shoes (Jordan's), same color, same style everything, same kind of clothes, same hair styles, accessories, etc and they consider themselves to be some of the most original people ever. But originality comes from a person being themselves and having their own sense of fashion and not trying to follow a trend. One celebrity that I applaud is Lady Gaga she may seem weird to the world but at the same time she is ORIGINAL in every essence of the word and at the end of the day she is just being her self and even in doing that she has been accepted by a lot of people. So you don't have to be a trend follower to be accepted and or popular you can be a trend setter and get the same type of attention if not more because you don't look like everyone else. YOU'RE DIFFERENT. It's ok to be different. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
ReplyDeleteThis blog was so good! Everyone is different in some way, and media teaches us that its the wrong way or the right way. It's funny when I think about it now, but in middle school I WANTED to be an outcast. I was sick of looking like every other girl. So I cut my hair short and dyed it crazy colors, and got a nose piercing. Since I was the new girl in 8th grade when I moved to NY everyone else started dying their hair and piercing their nose. It was so weird.. Some people see something new and they think it's weird, others see something new and they want to copy it. I would have never thought I would end up at another school looking the same as everyone else again, so I dyed my hair back to normal. I realized being me was all I had to be.
