Ignite Talk

Slide 1 I made this presentation for the the incoming freshmen that are wondering how to pass English 1102 with Lacy Manship, and also an opportunity to reflect on how much we've done in English 1102
Slide 2 English 1101 is a prerequisite for English 1102 so you need to pass 1101 before you can continue on to 1102
Slide 3 In order to get into English 1102 you first have to register for the class with Lacy! Lacy is the best english 1102 professor because she is so devoted to her students
Slide 4 In order to get into English 1102 you first have to register for the class with Lacy! Lacy is the best english 1102 professor because she is so devoted to her students
Slide 5 In other words, English 1102 will require us to define our own interests and connect it to what we've learned in class in order to craft it into an inquiry project to present to the class
Slide 6 Its important to attend class lectures so that you know what's going on in the class and when important assignments are due. Also its best to bring a laptop to class so that you can log into the classroom google docs
Slide 7 Along with going to class, make sure you get to know Lacy on a personal level because she will really help you when you need help. For example, during the mini projects, Lacy took the time to work with me in creating my mini projects
Slide 8 Get to know your classmates so that you can help each other out when you need help or when you need talk to someone about assignments that are due. Lacy advocates peer based learning!
Slide 9 Listen to the classroom red tape announcements for upcoming due dates so that you turn in assignments on time and listen to the classroom warm ups because they usually relate to the classroom agenda.
Slide 10 Participating in class activities and discussions are critical in English 1102 because it allows you to actively learn from your classmates (aka peer based learning) which maximizes your learning experience
Slide 11 The daybook is made to express your personal thoughts and is a great way to warm up your brain before class starts. The daybook requires you to take on an identity when you write.
Slide 12 Blogspot fosters risk taking learning by allowing users to share personal thoughts with others and challenges the writer to explore and think laterally not linearly
Slide 13 Not only is blog responses important because its a grade but it is also an opportunity to read about other peoples opinions and give feedback by responding with your own opinion; creating an interaction.
Slide 14 Its important to complete all assignments assigned by Lacy on time and to the best of your ability. Lacy really wants to see evidence that you are growing and changing with the way you think. Slide 15 Pick a book that intrigues your interest so that it will be easy to keep up with the reading assignment. Lacy gives us a free field to read a book of our choice.
Slide 16 "HOMAGO" "Good videos games and Good learning" "Representation" "Master and Little Narrative" were all class readings that advocated informal learning or challenged traditional schooling Slide 17 English 1102 looked like hanging out and messing around because you're allowed to participate in self-directed and interest driven activities in a non-judgemental environment
Slide 18 English 1102 helps you identify the type of writer you are, allows class interaction so that you can learn from your peers, and allows you to customize assignments to express the your identity.
Slide 19 English 1102 allows us to represent the way we think and learn through blogs, class discussions, and writing into the day. Its an opportunity to express how you make sense of English 1102
Slide 20 English 1102 advocates little narrative because it helps us realize that traditional learning is not the only one way to learn material. In order to be successful, be sure to be open minded in exploring the different types of learning

Final Blog Post

Click Here to view my final project

For my final blog post I decided to revise my second mini project. For my second mini project, I did a photo essay of what HOMAGO looks like. I showed picture examples of what Hanging out, Messing around, and Geeking out looks like with peer-based learning as the central topic. What I did to revise my photo essay was delete all the internet pictures and add my personal pictures. I felt like there was a conflict between the personal photos and the internet photos because there was a difference in the way they were taken. I also revised the sentences that are used in the photo essay; I carefully handcrafted all of the sentences so that they make sense and supported my views on peer-based learning. I changed the beginning and end of my presentation as well; I added photos to the title page and added a work cited page at the end of the presentation. My final revision was a success because I feel that this photo essay now does a great job in advocating peer-based learning.

Mini Project #3

http://storify.com/jokeiga/peer-based-learning-in-social-media/preview

For my 3rd mini project, I decided to use storify to show examples of how peer based learning is shown in social media. I wanted to do things differently by focusing on social media instead of defining what peer based learning is. As shown in my story on storify, I’ve provided excellent examples of how peer based learning is assimilated into different types of media. Mimi Ito states in her book “HOMAGO” that the growth of social media in young people’s daily lives is a part of important changes that structure young people’s learning. The way I interpret her statement is that social media has so much of an important role in young people’s lives that most of their learning comes from social media. For example, I could learn a fun fact about a subject just by reading someone’s status on Facebook. I could even learn how to get a 6 pack just by watching a YouTube video made by someone else. There are many ways of how peer learning is incorporated into social media, so many that I would not be able to show all them in one project but I hope you understand some of the examples I’ve shown in my storify.

HOMAGO

For my second mini project, I decided to take a different approach in presenting my information and create a photo essay. I created a photo essay so that I can personally show pictures of how peer based learning are displayed informally. I used Mimi Itos idea of HOMAGO to divide my photo essay into three separate parts. The first part shows examples of how hanging out is shown, the second part shows examples of how messing around is shown in informal settings, and the third part shoes how geeking out is displayed informally. I hope you enjoy!

Mini Project #1 reflection

My topic is peer-based learning and how it affects our ability to learn.   For the first mini project, I did an infograph. As shown in the picture, my infograph consists of 3 big circles that each represents different aspects to peer based learning.   The first circle is the “you” circle, the second circle is the “friends and popular culture” circle, and the third circle is the “teacher” circle. Each circle has individual factors but also has relationships with each other. The areas where two or more circles overlap are the areas of relationship. For example, the area where the “you” circle overlaps with the “friends/popular culture” shows the relationship between you and your friends.  This piece of work clearly shows how I believe that friends or popular culture has a tremendous influence in learning. Students learn a great deal from explaining their ideas to others and participating in activities in which they can learn from their peers.   I believe that one learns the most information from their peers and other social networks. The idea of interested-based learning is a factor for why the relationship between “you” and “friends” is so strong. Friends usually have the same interest as one another, which is why others learn more efficiently with one another. Tell me what you think about my project.

UNCC and Forestview Meetup

This week in English was more productive than last week. On Wednesday, we met with Forestview students and talked about college readiness. I personally enjoyed this activity and found it very beneficial for the high school students. I wish my senior year high school English teacher arranged an opportunity that allowed me to talk to current college freshmen. I never had the privilege to sit down and talk to a college student on a one on one basis when I was in high school. In fact, if it weren’t for my older friends that came home for break, I really wouldn’t know much about college. I think that the UNCC and Forestview Meetup was a great opportunity for incoming freshmen to talk to a current freshmen about college and ask curious questions and get honest answers. I really enjoyed interacting with my small group and sharing my own experiences with them about college. I felt like I did help them become more college ready by giving them advices and tips about college. Hopefully, we can do another activity with the Forestview students because I really like to help people. In this picture below is a picture of my small groups’ chart to show all of the external influences (people, places, and things) that effect how you think, how you act, and what you do.

Blah...

This has probably been the easiest week for our English class. We did not do much in our Monday class and didn’t have class on Wednesday. I don’t know why we didn’t have class on Wednesday but I was not complaining. I used the extra free time to reflect on my inquiry project and brainstorm ideas on how I am about to complete my inquiry project. I like how in Margarita’s Blog she questions if the environment or the people around you have an affect on your ability to learn. I feel like this topic is very relatable to me because in my midterm paper, I talked about how my peers and my surroundings impacted my ability to learn. I don’t know if I should be excited that freshmen year is coming to an end, its bittersweet moment. This year flew by, I still remember my first night in college but on the other hand I’m also ready for summer to start! Only 7 more weeks!
